The conventions of Brecht's Epic Theater involve an overview of some of his techniques. In future posts I'll delve deeper into some conventions, but for this post we'll look at a list of Epic Theater conventions that my drama students summarized in class this morning. I trust some readers of The Drama Teacher. Brecht used a style of theater that sought to raise the consciousness of workers, sometimes called agitprop or agitation-propaganda theater. Like Boal, Brecht opposed the use of empathy. Instead, he, B is for Brecht. The great German was only secondarily a Marxist. He was above all a playwright of exceptional power and scope. There is room for a Marxist playwright in the modern world.
