Kohlberg's theory suggests that moral development occurs in a series of six, the six stages of the Gibbs thinking cycle. The Gibbs thinking cycle includes six distinct stages: description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion, and action plan. Each step encourages critical thinking which encourages the development of many crucial skills such as logical thinking, decision-making and open-mindedness. 11. Creates independence. When we think critically, we think for ourselves and trust ourselves more. Critical thinking is essential to creating independence and encouraging students to make their own decisions. Developmental psychologists often use a number of theories to think about different aspects of human development. For example, a psychologist assessing a child's intellectual development might draw on Piaget's theory of cognitive development, which describes the key stages children go through as they learn. Critical thinking is a widely accepted educational goal. Its definition is contested, but competing definitions can be understood as different conceptions of the same basic concept: goal-directed careful thinking. Conceptions differ as to the scope of such thinking, the type of objective, the criteria and standards of thinking.
